During the pandemic many individuals purchased roller skates as a means to keep active in their homes while on quarantine. Soon pandemic roller skaters realized that they had great relief from the stressors attributed to isolation, job loss, school shutdowns and lack of connectivity to their community. The mental, emotional and physical benefits were impactful and the term skate therapy was birthed.
Reeling from the effects of the pandemic we understand more than ever the importance of community, healing and support systems for our young communities here in Portland, Oregon. The Zone exposes young underserved communities to skate therapy while addressing and removing barriers that limits personal growth, healing, education and career advancement.
